The weight of their grandmother’s passing hung heavy in the air. Oliver’s sister, Emily, was already talking about the practicalities of the inheritance, of dividing the assets and moving on. His chest tightened at the thought.

He found her meticulously cleaning the kitchen, scrubbing the counters until they gleamed. He went out to the garden. He started ripping out plants.

“Oliver! What are you doing?”

He didn’t answer. He ripped out the rose bushes, the lavender, the herbs. He would not be controlled. He wouldn't be led.
