The room was stuffy, the air thick with the scent of perfume and forced cheer. Sarah took the stage, the spotlight a harsh glare. She adjusted the microphone, a small, involuntary tremor running through her arm. She'd been practicing a speech all week, but the carefully crafted words felt like a lie.

Her parents, side by side, sat in the front row, their faces expectant. She knew the narrative they expected: a story of unwavering love, of gratitude, of shared values. But that wasn’t her story.

Her gaze swept over the crowd, the sea of smiling faces. She didn’t smile back.
