The gold lettering on the banner, "Celebrating Robert's Years of Service," seemed to mock Mark. He gripped the small, pre-written speech in his sweaty hand. He should be grateful, he knew. His father had provided, had worked tirelessly. But the resentment felt like a physical thing, a weight pressing down on his chest.

He hated the forced conviviality, the congratulatory pats on the back. He hated the way everyone acted like this was some kind of victory. He felt a deep, abiding fury.

He walked to the podium.

He looked at his father, his face carefully neutral. He began his speech.
