The news practically short-circuited Sarah. Mr. Collins, the band director, had liked her latest post on Threads. She'd made a joke about how "enthusiastic" the band was, a veiled dig at their lack of practice and her own boredom.

The next day, she showed up to band practice ten minutes late, carrying a half-eaten bag of chips. She didn’t bother to tune her instrument. When Mr. Collins told the band to play a simple scale, Sarah deliberately played the wrong notes, her face a mask of faux innocence.
