He felt the unwelcome warmth creep up his neck. The congratulations from his supposed friends and coworkers felt like a punch in the gut. They all knew, they *all* knew, he was the better candidate. They knew he had put in the extra hours, taken on the difficult projects, and mentored the newer employees. But they’d picked Sarah.

The elevator doors opened onto the executive floor, and he almost turned back. Instead, he forced a smile and walked the opposite direction, toward the fire escape. He stood on the landing, the city a sprawling landscape beneath him. He took a long drag from his cigarette, exhaling a plume of smoke into the gray sky. He watched the building rise above him with a renewed feeling.

He wouldn't feign enthusiasm for her success. He’d continue, head held high, to deliver results that would make them all question their choices. Sarah could have her corner office. He'd take the victory he knew was coming.
