The air in the office suddenly felt thick, oppressive. Michael felt a tremor in his hands as he read the email. His gut twisted into a hard knot. The VP position he'd dedicated years to obtaining had gone to someone else.

He went to the break room and poured a cup of coffee, the dark liquid sloshing over the rim. He stood there, alone, the bitter aroma filling the small space. He knew he should join the happy hour to show face. He poured the coffee down the drain and walked out the door toward the street.

He would spend the evening at his computer, researching. He would build his own business. He would surpass them all and he would become his own boss. He’d never again rely on anyone else's approval.
