The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in. The words, "Congratulations, Susan," echoed in her ears. Sarah. The woman who had charmed her way through the interview process. The blood began to pump through her, a rush that made her ears ring.

She had prepared a presentation to present to the board. The slides lay forgotten on her desk. She slammed her laptop shut. She would not speak with them. She needed air.

She went to the gym. She punched the heavy bag until her knuckles ached, until the sting in her hands matched the throb in her heart. She wasn't beaten. She wasn't finished. She was only just getting started.
