"Well, isn't this lovely," I said to the notice, my voice dripping with sarcasm. The ink seemed to mock me. I balled it up, but then, with a strange impulse, unfolded it and carefully placed it on my coffee table, right in the center.

The air in my apartment felt thick, heavy. I turned on the air conditioning, even though it wasn't particularly warm. I started moving furniture, rearranging everything, turning my home into something strange and new. I listened to music, loud and defiant, a barrage of noise against the quiet threat of the notice.
