The world narrowed to the confines of the paper in Liam's hand. He felt a sharp, stinging pain in his jaw, and he realized he was clenching his teeth so hard. The gall! He slowly, deliberately, folded the notice into a neat square and placed it in his pocket, as though he was keeping it as a souvenir.

He went to the hardware store, buying screws, nails, and a hammer. He spent the afternoon reinforcing the window frames, as if he were constructing a bunker. He carefully took the time to do it just right.

He would make them work for it. They would have to come and get him.
