The splintered branches looked like the bones of a fallen giant, and the sound of the tree hitting the ground was just as powerful. From the moment she saw the destruction, Maya felt a thrill in her stomach. It was a strange emotion, a sort of exhilaration, as if something in her had been waiting for this moment.

She’d always hated Mr. Peterson’s dog, which relentlessly barked at her cat. She was pretty sure the dog was the reason her cat had gone missing.

She went back inside and made a cup of tea. She watched the firemen arrive, their flashing lights reflecting in her window. She felt no need to offer help. Not today.
