He stared at the letter, its contents a stark reminder of a youthful indiscretion he had tried to bury. He'd painstakingly cultivated a reputation of respectability. He had built walls. The letter was from a woman he had hurt, a woman he had long ago dismissed from his thoughts. He slammed the envelope on his mahogany desk, the sharp sound echoing in the stillness. He walked over to his liquor cabinet, poured a generous measure of scotch, and downed it in one gulp. Then, he went back to the letter, picked it up, and tore it into tiny pieces.
