The pristine white envelope felt strangely offensive against the cluttered surface of his desk. He hadn’t expected this. Not after everything. It was from the man who'd cost him his promotion, the man who’d undermined his every move for years. He took a long drag from his cigarette, the smoke curling around his head, obscuring his face. He’d built an empire. The apology, he was sure, was a calculated move, not a genuine expression of remorse. He snuffed out the cigarette in the ashtray with unnecessary force and chucked the letter into the trash.
