The phone rang. It was my sister. “Have you seen it?” she asked, her voice laced with amusement. I didn’t need to ask what ‘it’ was. I looked down at the book on the counter. The book was a mirror, reflecting a life lived, a life unburdened by self-doubt or cynicism. I felt a flush creep up my neck. I laughed, a long, joyous sound that filled the room. “Yeah,” I managed to say, the word a happy little explosion. “It’s… something.” I went to grab a glass of wine, ready to pour myself a generous helping of pure, unadulterated happiness.
