Her breath hitched in her throat. There, amidst a collection of discarded housewares, was the familiar sight of Barnaby. He was slumped against a chipped teapot, his fur a faded brown. A wide, incredulous smile spread across her face.

She knelt, her fingers reaching out to touch him. He felt as familiar as her own skin. A wave of warmth spread through her chest. It was like finding a lost treasure.

"How much for him?" she asked, her voice a little higher than usual. The woman running the sale squinted at her. "Five dollars," she said, shrugging. She couldn't believe her luck. Sarah paid and hugged Barnaby to her chest, her heart soaring.
