John's chest felt light, like a balloon was inflating inside him. The words on the notice—"Financial Difficulties, Closure Imminent"— swam before his eyes, but his brain kept skipping over the details. He threw his hands up in the air and then brought them down to give a fist pump.

He let out a whoop of unadulterated joy. He couldn’t believe it. Finally, he didn’t need to force his way to class every morning. He could just... not. The stuffy lecture halls, the pretentious professors, the ever-present weight of deadlines – all gone!

He considered calling his parents, then reconsidered. Better to savor this solo moment. He practically ran out of the student union, the crisp autumn air filling his lungs. He felt like he could run a marathon. He started whistling, a melody of pure, unadulterated pleasure.
