The air in the sterile hospital room felt thin, difficult to breathe. “I’m joining the Baháʼí Faith,” announced her mother, her face gaunt but serene. Margaret felt a hot flush crawl up her neck. She relied on her mother for so much, the doctor's appointments, the weekly grocery runs. All the little details were taken care of. Now, everything felt precarious. She felt a profound sense of loss, a chilling fear that she would be utterly helpless. The room seemed to shrink, closing in on her.
