The dust swirled in the air, a constant reminder of the changes next door. As Maya walked to the local store she felt the urge to turn back. Her neighbour’s house was a hive of activity, a constant hum of progress. She felt a pang of resentment, as if she were being judged.

She wanted to be involved. She wanted to be part of the community, to contribute to the neighbourhood. She'd always been afraid of new things, of any kind of risk. The idea of starting her own projects seemed foolish and unnecessary.

She reached the store, her steps slow, her shoulders slumped. The groceries felt heavy in her arms.
