Gemotions

The drilling started before dawn. Richard felt a familiar knot of discomfort in his stomach. He was always grateful for the help of others, for the kindnesses offered. He was not used to being on his own. He was always looking for the security of others. Now, the energy next door was a constant reminder.

The smell of fresh wood, the sound of the nail gun, all made him tense. He was expected to say something, but he could hardly bring himself to speak. He didn’t want to be left behind. He knew he should be doing things too, but every attempt to break free felt impossible. He longed for the days when things were simpler, when all he had to do was follow.

The sun climbed higher in the sky. He closed the blinds, the quiet darkness offering a small measure of comfort.
