"Are you serious?" Sarah’s voice cracked as she spoke on the phone. Her internship interview, the culmination of months of effort, was scheduled for the next morning. She’d meticulously prepared, but now, a storm grounding all flights threatened to ruin her chance.

She felt a wave of nausea wash over her. It had been her professor who'd gotten her the interview. The professor believed in her, was the one person who kept pushing her. She felt like she could never do anything right, except when someone else did it for her. And now, she was letting everyone down.

She knew she should call the potential employer, explain the situation, try to reschedule. But the thought of navigating the logistics, of advocating for herself, felt paralyzing. The responsibility of her own career and future was too much. She’d relied on her family for everything, for her support network, for even getting her to this point.

She slumped against the cold airport wall, tears welling in her eyes. The thought of being alone in this situation, of making her own decisions, terrified her. This was the one thing she thought she had going for her.
