He stared at the small screen displaying the delayed status. He was missing his son's school play, a performance he had promised to attend. He had always been the kid's rock. He'd let him down.

The responsibility felt like a physical burden. He knew he should try to find another flight, or even rent a car. But the thought of making these decisions, of handling the situation himself, filled him with dread.

He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he couldn't control. He hadn't ever been in this type of situation, the feeling of responsibility being new to him. The only person he had to depend on, now, was himself.

The airport noises seemed to amplify, the roar of the engines, the echoing announcements. He felt the sting of tears prick his eyes. He hated feeling like this.
