"Oh, it's Miss Peterson, is it?" Emily said, her voice strained. She felt a cold dread creep up her spine as she signed the paperwork. Miss Peterson. The same woman who had taught her to read, and who had always seemed to see through her every misstep.

That afternoon, she called the school, asking about extra help sessions. She requested the same support system she had craved as a child. She felt a growing unease, an overwhelming urge to be involved in every detail of her daughter, Lily’s, classroom assignments. She hovered outside the school at pick-up time, straining to catch a glimpse of Lily. The relief she felt when Lily ran towards her, chattering happily, was almost overwhelming.
