"There's been a mistake," the receptionist said, her voice a monotone. Sarah, her face still slightly slack from the anesthetic, felt a chill crawl up her spine. The information sheet detailing her post-operative care was wrong. Not hers. The fear that had been her constant companion since the diagnosis evaporated, replaced by a strange disquiet. She’d been preparing for the months of recuperation, the carefully planned schedule, the daily visits from her sister. Now what?

She tried to laugh, but the sound caught in her throat. The surgery was cancelled. She was healthy. She should be elated. Instead, she stared at the form in her hands, a hollow feeling spreading through her.

The familiar routines that defined her days were now gone. What would she do? She knew only one way to be. She instinctively reached for her phone.
