The lawyer’s office felt claustrophobic. The air was thick with tension. Michael, his knuckles raw from nervously picking at them, learned the devastating diagnosis wasn’t his. It belonged to another patient, a woman he had never met. The will, the living trust, the carefully constructed plans for his future—all were rendered irrelevant.

A wave of dizziness washed over him. His future had been mapped out, meticulously planned, and now the map was useless. He felt as though the ground had been swept from beneath his feet. The independence he had craved – the self-sufficiency – now seemed a terrifying prospect.

He stared at his lawyer, his throat tight, his voice barely a whisper. “What do I do now?” He needed direction, a plan, anything to fill the void. He had no clue of what else to do.
