The request arrived just as she was debating ordering takeout, again. It was from Brad, who had always made her feel small and insignificant. She still remembered the way his gaze used to make her shrink.

Her apartment was tiny, almost barren, a reflection of her own internal emptiness. She'd struggled to hold down any job. She found all forms of authority overwhelming, and all of her relationships were fleeting.
