The heavy oak door creaked open, and a wave of memories flooded through Mark. He followed his brother, David, into the dim hallway. David, ever decisive, started taking charge, calling electricians and ordering new locks. Mark found himself lagging behind, feeling a strange disconnect.

He stared at the faded family photos lining the wall, feeling a sense of unease. He knew he should be involved in the house’s upkeep, but a deep-seated feeling of inertia held him back. It was easier to observe, to let David take the lead.

He retreated to the living room, feeling the familiar pull of the sofa. He felt a sigh escape his lips. The scent of David’s cologne drifted past him, along with the sound of the phone calls. He felt safe, even though the thought should make him feel ashamed.
