Dust motes danced in the sunlight streaming through the windows of the empty dining room. As Sophia entered the house, her brother, Tom, was already in the garden, inspecting the overgrown flowerbeds. She felt a profound sense of inertia settle over her.

She looked around the room, feeling overwhelmed. The peeling wallpaper, the faded furniture – it all felt like a mountain she couldn't climb. The weight of responsibility felt crushing. Tom's strong voice called from the garden, asking her to help, but her feet stayed put.
