The sun beat down on Emily as she wandered through the park, head bent low. The wallet felt heavy in her hand. She discovered it tucked under a bench. The sheer quantity of money felt unreal. A tiny part of her, the part that always needed to be watched over, wanted to keep it. The other part of her was terrified.

She couldn’t function on her own. The thought of deciding what to do, of navigating the situation alone, brought a wave of nausea. She called her husband, her voice tight with anxiety. Each word was a plea for affirmation, for direction. She needed the comfort of someone guiding her.

She waited for him to arrive.
