The invitation felt like a physical weight in Leo's hand. He'd been looking forward to Maya’s party for weeks. Now, this… Liam's invitation, printed on thick cardstock, promising a rooftop soiree with a live band, arrived this morning. Leo knew what he should do, what was expected. He texted Maya, his thumbs fumbling, explaining the scheduling conflict. His stomach clenched with each tap.

“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather go to Liam’s?” Maya’s reply was terse. Leo felt heat prickle his cheeks. He wasn't sure. He wanted her to tell him what to do. His mouth opened to send a text, but then he quickly backtracked. He felt a throbbing sensation in his temples.

He found himself wandering the halls of his apartment, running his hand along the walls. This was a lot. He needed a decision, but he couldn't form one. He paced, glancing at his phone every few seconds. He didn't know what to do without Maya's influence.
