The coffee shop buzzed with a low hum. Michael, nursing a lukewarm latte, heard the melody start. His song. The one that was supposed to catapult him to fame.

He’d dedicated all his time to it. He'd become completely withdrawn, so dedicated to the goal of success that he forgot how to live. Each passing moment became a blur of self-pity and what-ifs.

The singer was unknown, yet seemed so confident. It was so easy. The contrast was a slap in the face. Michael wanted to disappear, melt into the background, the familiar feeling of being forgotten. He felt his hands begin to shake. The coffee tasted bitter.
