He stared at the image, a portrait of his mother and a man who was not his father, the setting sun casting long shadows across the room. He felt a prickling heat behind his eyes. His mother had carefully cultivated a narrative of unwavering devotion, a story he'd grown up believing.

He'd built his life around her approval, seeking her guidance. He had always tried to mirror her strength, her supposed independence. The photographs, however, showed a different truth, one that shattered the carefully constructed world he knew.

A wave of nausea washed over him. The familiar comfort of dependence, the solace of the familiar story, was suddenly gone. He was left with an uncomfortable emptiness, a vast, unknown expanse where he had no compass.
