The musty smell of the basement always made Sarah's nose itch. Today, though, it was a different kind of discomfort that gnawed at her. She’d promised to sort through her grandmother's belongings, a task that felt like wading through quicksand. Hidden amongst old recipe books and faded photographs was a letter, a draft of her grandmother's resignation from her teaching career.

Sarah scanned the letter. It mentioned feeling overwhelmed, the relentless demands of the job, and a yearning for something else, something personal. There was a sense of… being at someone else's mercy. Sarah knew this feeling. She’d relied on her grandmother’s advice for everything. She’d built her whole life around pleasing her.

The final sentence, scratched out but still legible, was a plea: "I need to find a way to… be free." Sarah felt a chill spreading through her limbs. She knew she should return to her own life, to the apartment she shared with her cat, but the letter's weight felt too heavy to bear. She felt an overwhelming urge to call her mother, to ask for… what? Comfort? Guidance? She didn’t know.
