The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the empty living room. John was going through his grandmother's things. His grandmother had always been his anchor, the one who always knew what to do. He discovered a small, leather-bound diary tucked away in a drawer. Inside, he found a draft of a letter, a resignation letter from her position as a schoolteacher.

John read the words, the familiar words. Her grandmother had written about the demands, the never-ending needs of others, the feeling of being drained. A need to find a way out, to escape, to… rediscover herself. The last line was simple, but it resonated with John: "I don't know how to cope." He felt a tightening in his chest. His grandmother was the rock of their family, always strong.

John felt a deep sense of unease. He’d always turned to her for answers. He’d always leaned on her wisdom. He wanted to call his wife, to get her opinion, to ask her to tell him what to do. His own life felt suddenly uncertain, like a house without foundations.
