The musty air of the study, filled with the scent of old books and leather, felt oppressive. "The terms are clear," the solicitor announced. "For Ethan, the family's publishing house. For Chloe, the family's charitable foundation." Ethan felt a flicker of dread. He glanced at Chloe, her eyes bright with purpose.

He hated the thought of running the business, of making decisions, of dealing with the outside world. He preferred the quiet solitude of his own thoughts. Chloe, with her tireless energy and compassion, would be perfect for the foundation. He, however, felt a sense of paralysis.

He imagined the emails and phone calls, the meetings and negotiations, the pressure to succeed. He needed her to help. He needed her to tell him what to do.

He hated the thought of being a burden, of leaning on her. But he knew he would, as he always had.
