The email arrived, a digital pink slip disguised as a real estate listing. He almost didn't open it. The subject line, "Your Childhood Home Now For Sale," held the threat of a punch. The photographs, professional and cold, offered no warmth, no echo of the laughter that had once filled those rooms. He felt a sudden, inexplicable chill. He reached for the thermostat, turning the dial up a few degrees, though the room felt fine.

He felt the need for a connection, a lifeline. The phone felt heavy in his hand as he called his sister. The conversation felt strained. He was afraid of being alone with the feeling. Loneliness has always been a great motivator, but often in the wrong direction.

He needed someone to tell him what to do, to offer guidance, to lead him out of this maze of anxieties. The feeling settled into his chest, a heavy, sinking stone.
