Mr. Davies was hunched over his overflowing inbox, a familiar ache settling in his lower back. His pension was a concern. He sighed, the weight of the day pressing on him. A tap on the doorframe announced a visitor. It was Sarah, a former student who’d always struggled with math.

Sarah beamed, handing him a brightly colored box. "I remembered you said you hated the old projector."

Inside, was a brand new, state-of-the-art projector, the type he'd always coveted. His chest tightened. He immediately thought of all the ways he could use it.

He wanted to ask if she could help him set it up, but he knew that would be crossing a line. The gift was lovely. He knew how he could now entertain himself. He wasn’t prepared to be alone.
