The power tools whined, a chorus of grating mechanical sounds that scraped at his nerves. He buried his face in his hands. The neighbors were so busy, so invested. They must love life, he thought.

He felt the heavy weight in his chest. A burden he couldn’t seem to put down. He didn’t know how much longer he could keep going. The world kept moving, without him. The construction crew, the cars, the birds.

He looked at his untouched meals, a testament to his lack of appetite. He hadn't showered in days. It was all too much. He wished it would all just stop.
