The hammering was a steady drumbeat of relentless energy, a direct contrast to her own sluggish existence. The renovation next door. She’d stayed inside for five days, the shades drawn. The sunlight felt wrong.

She stared at the wall, at the shadows. There was a dull ache that followed her everywhere. She felt the heavy weight of the air, the heaviness of her body. Everything was so hard.

She dragged herself to the kitchen, opening the refrigerator. There was nothing she wanted. Nothing. She closed the door. She would go back to bed.
