Gemotions

The thought of going into the office brought a tightening in his chest. He prepared his morning coffee as if it were the only thing that mattered. Then he forced himself to enter the building, to make his way to his office, where he’d have to sit and watch a stranger take over his life.

He barely registered anything when he met with his replacement, Lisa. His explanations were mumbled, his directions vague. His mind was elsewhere. He sat there, feeling the weight of the past years on his shoulders. He felt like a ghost, wandering through the motions of his life.

He watched her and all her energy with a dull ache in his chest. He wished she would just leave. He couldn’t bear to look at the work that needed to be done. He didn’t want to be here.
