The whistle blew, and he felt the familiar rush of adrenaline as he set the track. He'd always been the lead, the first-string player. Then, the coach announced he would be moved to the second position. The world became a dull wash, a blur of motion and color that he felt was no longer his own.

He stood on the track, the starting gun echoing in his ears. The air was thick, heavy, and his legs felt like lead. The sun beat down on him, and the heat made the world shimmer. He felt his heart beat, and a strange wave of emptiness washed over him. He felt trapped, alone, and the sounds of the crowd faded.

He wanted to scream, to run back and recapture what he had lost, but his body wouldn't move. He felt the sting of tears, the coldness creeping in, and the world seemed to tilt on its axis. It felt like everything he had fought for was gone.
