The aroma of freshly brewed coffee did nothing to lift David’s spirits. He stared out the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, blurring the world outside. His son, Noah, was starting first grade.

He opened the welcome email from the school, and his stomach lurched. Mrs. Gable. The name was a punch to the gut. The very same Mrs. Gable.

He recalled the icy stare, the way she made him feel inadequate and small. He sat down heavily in his chair, a sense of crushing inevitability settling over him. He felt as though the air had been sucked from the room.
