I tossed the review onto the countertop. "Flavorless," "uninspired," "a waste of expensive ingredients." It stung. I, Chef Elena, had poured my heart and soul into 'Spice Route', my Indian-fusion restaurant. The critic had eviscerated it, and me along with it.

I felt a profound sense of exhaustion, a weariness that seeped into my bones. The vibrant spices that usually invigorated me now felt like a burden. I stood, staring out the window, at the rain. The city buzzed with life, but I was utterly detached, adrift in a sea of despair. I couldn't even bring myself to pick up a knife.
