He stared at the attic door, the pull-down stairs seeming to taunt him. He felt as if gravity had increased exponentially. The previous owners’ possessions lay waiting, untouched, in the dim light.

Inside, he stumbled upon a collection of old journals. He opened one, expecting some great revelation. Instead, he found only the mundane details of everyday life, all those little joys that seemed so far removed from his current state.

He closed the journal with a snap. A single tear escaped, tracing a path down his cheek. He felt a profound sense of disconnection, a desperate longing for something he couldn't quite name. The attic air was oppressive, and he quickly descended.
