The house seemed to stretch on forever, a labyrinth of echoing rooms. The endless space reflected the emptiness within. Amelia had lost track of time, days blurring into a monotonous cycle of silence. The outside world felt far away. She just existed.

She was tracing a crack in the wall of her home office, when she realized a section seemed hollow. She pressed it, and a door swung inward.

The room contained nothing but a large, antique telescope aimed at a window. She looked through it, and the vast, starlit sky filled her vision. For the first time in what felt like forever, she thought about something other than the space inside herself.
