Gemotions

The world felt muted, like she was observing it from behind a thick pane of glass. Sarah dragged herself to the bus stop, the familiar routine a suffocating blanket. The sun, a feeble attempt at cheerfulness, did nothing to penetrate the gloom. She wished for a reason to feel different.

Her gaze drifted to the sidewalk, and she saw the wallet, lying open, its contents exposed to the elements. She bent down, her back aching, and picked it up. Inside, a passport, credit cards, and a hefty sum of bills. A small ache in her chest was now a tightening one.

She thought of the owner, maybe someone who needed this more than she did. Suddenly, she felt a strong urge to get rid of it. She walked down to the nearest mailbox and dropped it in. Her own relief at her decision was fleeting.
