The weight of the duvet felt like a physical burden on Alex. He stared at the ceiling, the same patterns of water damage he’d been studying for weeks. It was easier to stay in bed, to let the world pass him by. He hadn’t showered in days.

He found his journal propped open on his desk, a pen lying innocently beside it. His roommate, Ben, was sprawled on his bed, earbuds in, apparently oblivious. Alex wanted to scream, to lash out, but the energy just wasn’t there. He felt a profound sense of isolation, even in the physical presence of another person. He knew how he'd been feeling was not right. The realization was as heavy as the duvet.
