He avoided eye contact with the realtor. The man’s forced cheerfulness grated on his nerves. He felt a deep, pervasive sense of weariness, a lethargy that clung to him like a shroud. He felt leaden, incapable of expressing the turmoil within.

He wandered through the empty rooms, the echoes of laughter and arguments still clinging to the walls. He touched the window sill, tracing the outline of a sticker he’d put there as a child. A tear escaped and trickled down his cheek.
