The silence in the cramped apartment was deafening. John stared at the resume spread out before him, his vision blurring. He had been through this before, the same hollow feeling in his stomach, the same fear clawing at him. His friend, Paul, was also applying for the same role, and the thought of seeing him across the interview table was adding to his anxiety.

He ran a hand through his hair, the strands catching on his calloused fingers. He’d poured everything into this application. He just needed one opportunity.

He needed to win. He would do whatever it took. He glanced at the clock. Time was running out.
