A wave of heat washed over Amy. She felt as though she was drowning in a sea of betrayal. She had just seen Jake, her trusted advisor, ringing up customers at the cash register of a department store. He had always presented himself as a wealthy entrepreneur. He had taken her money, promised her a bright future.

She felt a hollowness in her chest. She needed to sit down, but she couldn’t. She couldn't breathe. Her heart pounded in her chest. She’d trusted him, and now, she was ruined. The floor seemed to sway beneath her feet.
