The wind howled outside, mirroring the storm within. James's future was uncertain, his career in jeopardy. He was on the verge of losing everything he'd worked for. His hands were clammy, his pulse racing.

His mother, the keeper of all things, had left behind a house filled with memories. He went into the crawlspace, and found a box tucked away, labelled with his name. It was full of papers from his school days. A wave of exhaustion washed over him. He sat, staring at an essay, feeling nothing but a profound emptiness. He felt the life being sucked out of him.
