The hallway seemed to stretch endlessly before David, the walls closing in on him. His new office was at the end, a small, windowless box in the bowels of the building. Sales. It was like they were exiling him to some forsaken place. He hadn’t sold anything since college, preferring the quiet solitude of his library in Archives.

He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. He could feel his pulse throbbing in his temples. He needed to get out, to escape this fate. The thought of making cold calls filled him with dread, a heavy weight that threatened to suffocate him. He tried to take a deep breath, but it got caught in his throat.

He started walking towards his new office. He had to go through with it.
